aimless meanderings and random thoughts

So today I have a cold and feel like crap. This totally sucks, because I normally don't get sick too often.
Speaking of the cold/flu season, I think the media is doing a disservice (again) about the flu coverage. Sure, coverage is appropriate, but they way they do it just seems to fuel a hysteria. The next thing you know, mothers everywhere are going to be calling 911 at the slightest sign of a sniffle in their children.

Now don't get me wrong, mothers are going to care for the health of their children, but colds and flu a part of life. The average death toll is ~35,000. There is something like a max of 75,000 predicted this year. A very bad year, to be sure, but it's not anything like the 1918 strain, which killed 20-40 million worldwide (at a time when the population of the world was less than 2 billion at the time.

I'm not arguing that we take this lightly, or that such a pandemic will not occur again. I'm just saying that we should put this into perspective. The media should choose its words carefully, taking care to avoid terms that promote fear and hysteria.
